Operation Sweaters for Veterans
2015-11-04
DALLAS, TX (October 27, 2015) Beginning Wednesday, November 4 through Veterans Day, Wednesday November 11, Hughes Family Tribute Center will collect new or gently used sweaters and gloves as part of the 8th Annual Operation Sweaters for Veterans, a nation-wide community service sponsored by Veterans & Family Memorial Care. Collected clothing will be donated to veterans in Dallas VA Medical Center and other veteran care centers. “We hope this small gesture of collecting sweaters and gloves for our veterans will help everyone remember the sacrifices they’ve made in the name of the United States of America,” says DeWayne Hughes, owner and manager of Hughes Family Tribute Center Everyone in the community is invited to support U.S. veterans by bringing donations of new and gently-used sweaters and gloves to the following location: Hughes Family Tribute Center 9700 Webb Chapel Road Dallas, Texas 75220 214-350-9951 Weekdays: November 4, 5, 6 and 9, 10, and 11, 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Saturday, November 7, 9:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 8, 1:00 p.m. through 4:00 p.m. On Wednesday November 11, 2015 Americans throughout the world will commemorate Veterans Day, a day set aside to thank the nation’s veterans for service given and sacrifices made. Hughes Family Tribute Center is one of approximately 1,000 Veterans & Family Memorial Care funeral home providers across America sponsoring the 8th Annual Operation Sweaters for Veterans. November 11 is the anniversary of the Armistice signed in the Forest of Compiegne by the Allies and the Germans in 1918. At 5 a.m. on Monday, November 11, 1918 the Germans signed the Armistice; an order was issued for all firing to cease, bringing the hostilities of the First World War to an end. The day began with the laying down of arms, blowing of whistles, impromptu parades and the closing of places of business . . . just a few examples of the many joyous demonstrations throughout the world on this historic occasion. In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson issued his Armistice Day proclamation. The last paragraph set the tone for future observances: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation."
