BARBARA EVELYN SHIVE SHAWVER
July 26, 1938 - March 8, 2017
Barbara was born in Dallas, Texas on July 26, 1938. She passed away peacefully at home on March 8, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kathryn Evelyn Saunderson Shive and Robert Allen Shive. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Harry Reed Shawver, Jr. and their four children and their spouses: Reed Shawver (Alisa), Kathryn Keller (John), Susan Dunnill (Billy) and Robert Shawver (Amy). She was a wonderful grandmother to her nine grandchildren: Colton Shawver; Lauren and John Harrell; Connor, William and Kathryn Dunnill; and Zack, Daniel and Chiara Shawver. She is also survived by her brother and his wife, Robert Allen Shive, Jr. and Lynda of Jackson, MS.
Barbara lived her whole life in Dallas, graduating from North Dallas High School in 1956. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Southern Methodist University, where she was a Tri Delta and later served as President of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Delta Delta. She was a faithful servant who served her church in many ways through teaching Sunday School and participating in Bible study groups. She was President of the PTA at White Rock Elementary School. Barbara was involved in many activities, including team tennis and volunteer positions with her children in the Highland Park Independent School District. She was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church, The Dallas Woman’s Club, The Dallas Garden Club and the Mary K. Craig Class.
She and her husband traveled to many international destinations and often did extensive research and study in advance of their trips. Especially memorable were Italy, Spain, Jerusalem, Greece, and Kiev in the Ukraine. She greatly enjoyed family time, including trips to the beach and ski vacations as well as precious time at the family farm.
A graveside service will be held at 2 PM on Friday, March 10th at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 7403 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, TX 75225. The memorial service will be in Cox Chapel at Highland Park United Methodist Church at 11 AM on Saturday, March 11th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Highland Park United Methodist Church or to the charity of your choice.
